Hair loss: autumn and postpartum

Losing hair does not always mean a problem. The body has cycles, and two of them, autumn and the period after birth, frighten many women without need. Here is what is normal and what is not.

The reassuring answer: losing 50 to 100 strands a day is completely normal. The shedding rises noticeably in two periods, in autumn and a few months after birth, and both are temporary. Below is why they happen and when it is worth asking for help.

Seasonal shedding in autumn

Many women notice more strands in the comb from late summer into autumn. This is tied to the natural cycle of the hair: a share of the strands that entered a resting phase during summer fall together a few weeks later. It is visible, but passing, and the hair recovers on its own within a few months.

Postpartum shedding

During pregnancy the hair looks denser because hormones keep the strands in the growth phase longer. After birth those strands all move into the shedding phase together, usually between the second and sixth month. It looks alarming, but it is a return to the normal rhythm, not permanent loss. Most women see the density come back within the first year.

When to seek medical advice

Seasonal and postpartum shedding need no treatment. But if you see bald patches, visible thinning at the parting that does not pass after six months, or shedding that comes with other symptoms, that is for a doctor, not the salon.
