A box of hair dye costs little and takes an hour in the bathroom. The salon costs more and takes longer. The real difference shows up later, in what happens to your hair over the months after you color it.
The short answer: home hair color works when you want the same shade or slightly darker than your natural hair, or when you are only touching up roots. Anything that lightens, any bleach, heavy grey coverage or hair with old color on it is safer in a salon. A full color at B&B Elegance costs 40 €.
Box dye, like any over-the-counter hair color, is made for every head of hair at once. The formula is fixed, the developer is fixed and the timing is printed on the leaflet, whether your hair is fine, coarse, virgin or colored five times. To work on as many people as possible, it is usually stronger than your hair needs.
In a salon the formula is mixed for you. The colorist picks the developer strength, treats roots and lengths differently and watches the hair the whole time. Roots that have never been colored and ends that have taken dye ten times need different things. At home the dye usually goes on the same way from root to tip, and that is where dark, dry ends begin.
| At home | In the salon | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | The price of a box, every time | 40 € for a full color |
| Result | Flat color; the shade on the box often turns out different on real hair | Formula matched to your hair, roots and lengths balanced |
| Risk | Patches, roots lighter than ends, orange or brassy tones | Lower, because the hair is assessed before anything starts |
| How long it lasts | Fades fast on damaged ends | More even over time, with the right care at home |
Sometimes, yes. For simple jobs a box does the work well enough:
Even then, do the allergy patch test 48 hours ahead, as every box tells you. Apply the dye to the roots first and only pull it through the lengths in the last minutes, so the ends do not get a little darker every month.
One box color rarely ruins hair. The trouble comes from layering. Every time dye goes over the full length, the ends get another coat of pigment and another chemical hit. After a few months the hair is darker at the ends than at the roots, rough to the touch and hard to lighten.
The riskiest case is bleach bought to use on your own. Bleach works fast and does not forgive: a few extra minutes, or a stronger developer, leaves the hair brittle and prone to snapping. We explain how that damage happens, and how to avoid it, in the guide does bleaching damage hair.
Dark box dyes leave pigment deep in the hair. When you later want balayage or highlights, that pigment has to come out before the hair can lift, and on the way it usually shows red or orange. Henna is harder still: some henna products contain metallic salts that react with bleach.
That is why your colorist needs your full color history, including the bathroom dye from two years ago. Besire, who has worked with hair for more than 20 years, asks about it first, and the plan changes with the answer. If the result has already gone wrong, the way out is color correction, not another box.
Red and copper fade faster than any other shade. Red pigment washes out with water more easily and breaks down faster in sunlight. Cool light tones, such as ash or pearl blonde, also lose their tone within a few weeks and drift toward yellow. Dark brown lasts longest. If you choose red, plan for more frequent refreshes. If your blonde is turning brassy, see our guide on removing brassy tones.
Come to the salon when you want a real change, or when your hair has collected too much history to fix on your own. Message us on WhatsApp with a photo of your hair in daylight, a photo of the color you want and a short list of what has gone on your hair in the last two years: box dye, henna, bleach. With that, Besire can tell you before the visit whether your color is possible in one session or needs a plan. You will find us on Rr. Jakov Xoxa in Pristina, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 18:00.
