Does bleaching and coloring damage your hair?

By Besire Selmancena, 20+ years of experience

The question everyone asks before a balayage or a lift. The honest answer: bleaching affects the hair, a simple color far less. But the gap between light damage and a wrecked head of hair comes down to the hand that does the work and the care that follows.

The short answer: a simple color (the same shade or darker) barely touches the hair, because it takes no pigment out. Bleaching (lifting, balayage, highlights) opens the cuticle to pull the color out, and that is where the possible damage comes in. But the damage is manageable. It is not whether you lighten, it is how you lighten and how you care for it after.

Why bleaching affects the hair

To lighten hair, bleach opens the outer protective layer and removes pigment. The process leaves the hair more porous and thirstier for moisture. The bigger the lift in a single step, the more the hair feels it. That is why black hair pushed to platinum blonde in one day comes out damaged, while the same result reached patiently, over a few sessions, keeps the hair intact.

What makes the difference

FactorWhy it matters
How much you lift in one stepA big lift all at once damages more than a gradual one
The starting condition of the hairHealthy hair takes bleach, damaged hair does not
The hand that does the workWhen the product is stopped and how long it stays decides between light and heavy damage
The care afterHydration and a gentle shampoo bring the hair back

How to lighten with minimal damage

When the hair says no

Sometimes the honest answer is to wait. If the hair is already damaged, a fresh lift on top of it can break it. In those cases Besire tells you openly what comes out today with no risk and what needs the hair strengthened first. This is exactly what you buy when you choose experience: not the look on day one, but healthy hair in month six. To start, send us a photo.
