How to remove brassy tones from colored hair

By Besire Selmancena, 20+ years of experience

Yellow or orange tones on lightened hair are not an unavoidable mistake; they are chemistry you can understand and manage. Here is why it happens and how to keep your color clean for longer.

The short answer: brassy tone is removed with toning, the opposite color that neutralizes it. Purple cancels yellow, blue cancels orange. At home a purple shampoo keeps it in check; in the salon a full toning corrects it. Below is why it happens and which solution fits your case.

Why hair turns yellow

When dark hair is lightened with bleach, it passes through stages: brown, orange, yellow, pale yellow. If the process stops at the yellow stage, or if the first toning fades over time, that warm natural tone rises back to the surface. This is why a balayage or a lift looks cool in the first week and a little warmer after a month.

What works and what does not

MethodWhat it doesWhen
Purple shampooNeutralizes light yellow between visitsOnce or twice a week, not every wash
Salon toningCorrects the full tone, orange includedWhen the color has slipped noticeably
Hydrating maskDoes not remove tone, but keeps the color from fading fastOnce a week

Careful with purple shampoo: too much leaves the hair with a gray or purplish cast. The simple rule is a little and rarely, not a lot every day.

Why orange needs the salon

Light yellow tone can be managed at home, but orange cannot. It needs blue to neutralize it and often a light re-lightening before toning. Besire does this after seeing how much color is left in the hair, because toning over the wrong base comes out an unexpected shade.

How to slow the return of tone

You will find the full care routine after coloring in the guide on caring for colored hair. If your tone has gone far off, do not try to fix it with a home color; send us a photo and we tell you what it really needs.
