Balayage or highlights: the difference and what suits you

By Besire Selmancena, 20+ years of experience

Both bring light into the hair, but in different ways. Highlights are sectioned with foils for even reflections, balayage is hand-painted for a natural blend. Here is how to choose.

The short answer: highlights (foiled strands) give regular, even reflections from root to tip, while balayage is hand-painted and starts lower for a natural, sun-kissed look. Highlights need the root refreshed more often; balayage grows out with no visible line.

The difference in technique

With highlights, strands are sectioned and wrapped in foil, so the product works right up to the root and the reflections come out uniform. With balayage, the color is painted freely by hand, lighter at the root and denser at the ends, so the transition melts. That is why balayage looks like your hair lightened on its own, while highlights look more designed.
