Hairstyles for your face shape

By Besire Selmancena, 20+ years of experience

The right cut does not copy a photo, it balances your face. A style that flatters a square face may not flatter a long one. Here is how to find the shapes that frame you best.

The short answer: the goal is to move every shape toward a balanced oval. A long face wants less length and more volume at the sides; a square face wants soft waves that ease the jaw; a round face wants height and length that stretch it. Below, each one.

How to find your shape

Tie your hair back, look in the mirror and notice what is widest: the forehead, the cheekbones or the jaw, and how long the face looks. That gives you the base shape. Most people are a mix, so the rules are a guide, not a law.

ShapeSuits bestAvoid
RoundHeight at the crown, layers that lengthenVery short, rounded cuts
SquareSoft waves, layers around the jawBlunt cuts at the jawline
LongVolume at the sides, bangs, mid lengthVery long, flat hair with no volume
Heart-shapedVolume lower down, length at the jawToo much volume at the crown

Bangs and the parting

Bangs are the fastest way to shift the balance: side-swept bangs soften a square face, full bangs shorten a long one. The parting helps too; a side part adds movement to a round face, while a center part lengthens a shorter one.

From the rule to you

Shapes are a starting point, not the end. Your real hair, its texture and your lifestyle matter as much as the shape of your face. Besire reads all of it together and tells you what balances your face and what you can keep up easily at home.
