Balayage aftercare: how to keep it and how long it lasts

By Besire Selmancena, 20+ years of experience

A beautiful balayage does not end when you leave the salon, that is where it begins. The first care decides how long the tone stays clean and how healthy the hair looks. Here is what to do and what to expect.

The short answer: don't wash your hair for 48 hours, switch to a sulphate-free shampoo, protect it from heat and expect to refresh it after three to four months. That is what keeps a balayage beautiful and long-lasting. Each step is below.

When to wash it the first time

Wait at least 48 hours before the first wash. After lightening and toning, the cuticle needs to close and the colour needs to settle. Washing too early pulls the tone out before it stabilises, and that fresh first-day shine is lost for no reason.

The routine that keeps the tone

Hydration after lightening

Lightening makes the hair thirstier for moisture. A hydrating mask once a week is not a luxury, it is the minimum that keeps the hair elastic and glossy. For blonde or very light hair, this matters even more. You will find the full routine for colored hair in this guide.

How long does a balayage last

This is the question we hear most often. The great advantage of balayage is exactly its longevity: because the colour is painted below the root, the hair grows out with no visible line. So a balayage usually lasts three to four months before it asks for a refresh, sometimes even longer. That makes it more economical over time than a full colour, which needs a root touch-up every three to four weeks.

When to refresh your balayage

The first sign that a balayage needs refreshing is not the root, as it is with a full color, but the tone fading and the shine dropping at the ends. This usually happens after three to four months, and for many people even later. If you want to keep it looking fresh at all times, a single toner between sessions revives the shine without reworking the whole head of hair.

Balayage, swimming and salt water

Pool chlorine and sea salt are the hidden enemy of balayage; they dull the tone and dry out lightened hair. Before you get in the water, wet your hair with clean water and add a little conditioner, because hair that is already saturated with clean water absorbs less chlorine. After swimming, rinse it as soon as you can. If you swim often over the summer, a hydrating mask after each swim keeps the tone and the elasticity.
