Hair guides
A small question with real consequences. Washing wrong will not ruin your balayage, but it makes the work harder and the scalp more sensitive. Here is the simple rule.
The short answer: yes, but not that morning. Wash your hair one or two days before the appointment. Neither freshly washed at the last minute, nor unwashed for a week; both extremes make the work harder.
The thin layer of natural oil that builds up over a day or two protects your scalp during lightening. Hair washed the same morning has lost that protection, and the scalp can feel the product more; not a burn, but an unpleasant sting. Besides that, squeaky-clean hair is slippery, and sections separate less cleanly during hand-painting.
The other extreme does not help either. Heavy oil and product buildup form a film the lightener has to fight through, and the result comes out less even. "The dirtier the better" is a myth; two days is enough, seven is too many.
Come with dry hair, combed normally, without styling products. That is all. The rest, the reference photo, your coloring history and enough time, is in the full guide on how to prepare for balayage, and how long to expect the visit to last is in how long does balayage take.
The opposite rule applies once you leave the salon: wait 48 hours before the first wash, so the toner settles. The full care routine is written out in caring for colored hair.
